Don't see the reason you want?
Several factors played a part in GNR's demise, but it all begins with the 'Use Your Illusion' albums. Although far from failures and containing great songs in their own right, those albums lacked the raw energy of 'Appetite for Destruction' and were steps in the wrong direction. That, the chaotic production of the albums, arguments over artistic direction, and a Spinal Tap-like tour with Metallica led to Izzy Stradlin, the soul of GNR, leaving. From there, the bottom fell out. Lineup instability, Axl Rose's antics, and the rise of Nirvana sucked the spirit out of a band that was, unfortunatly, already dead.
There is no amount of hard driving musicianship that will off-set the whiney, strident, irritating vocal stylings of William Baily aka Axl Rose.
It was evident the Axl had completely lost it by the time "Use Your Illusion II" was produced. He had basically gone from from singing lyrics such as "if you want it you're gonna bleed" in "Welcome to the Jungle" to swimming with dolphins in the video for "Estranged" (Use Your Illusion II). No wonder his band gave up the ship and ditched him at that point.
Once Axl's ego took over, the band was never the same.
